Gegründet im 9. Jh. durch die Grafen von Burgund, erlebte Gray im 16. Jh. dank der Dynamik des Flusshandels und der kontinuierlichen Anwesenheit einer politischen Elite eine Blütezeit. Die Renaissancekunst kam auf, und so wurde die Kirche in dem neuen Stil umgebaut und das Rathaus errichtet (1567-1572). Ebenfalls sehenswert ist die Basilika Notre-Dame aus dem 15./16. Jahrhundert.
