Das Städtchen Augustenborg pflegt die Reste seiner Wikingerfestung. Das Schloss im Zentrum der Stadt steht dabei im touristischen Mittelpunkt: 1660 von Herzog Ernst Günther erbaut, wurde es zum Hauptsitz der Herzogsfamilie von Augustenborg. Am Schloss finden sich auch Stuckarbeiten des Italieners Michelangelo Taddei. Heute ist eine psychiatrische Klinik darin untergebracht; verschiedene Räume, ein Museum und die Kirche können aber besichtigt werden.
