Das Woudagemaal – das einzige noch funktionstüchtige Dampfpumpwerk der Welt (Fertigstellung 1920) – im Dorf Tacozijl in der Nähe von Lemmer steht als Weltkulturerbe auf der Liste der UNESCO. Über viele Jahre hinweg ist es das Modell für ähnliche Anlagen in aller Welt geblieben. Nicht nur die Technik, auch die Architektur der Anlage gilt als vorbildlich. Sie versinnbildlicht eindrucksvoll den Glauben an den technischen Fortschritt. Der Industriebau wirkt wie eine lang gestreckte Wasserburg, umgeben von alten Bäumen und Schilf.
