Berühmtester Sohn der Stadt ist Peter Schöffer (ca. 1425-1503), der als Kalligraph, Typograph, Buchdrucker und Mitarbeiter Gutenbergs die Geschichte des Buchdrucks mitschrieb. Das Peter-Schöffer-Haus am gleichnamigen Platz ist heute ein Museum. In Gernsheim findet außerdem alljährlich Ende Juli / Anfang August das Rheinische Fischerfest statt, eines der größten Volksfeste am Rhein.
