Hei 🙂

Selling my wonderful Hallberg Rassy 29 Scandinavia here, since I don’t get as many days on the water as I wish for, and since I am lacking the money and time to provide for Ejder during busy PhD studies, young-people-establishing-themselves-in-the-city-period and travels abroad.

Hallberg Rassy 29 is a Swedish quality sailboat with fantastic sailing characteristics, charm, and amazing usage of available space. Practical and safe, Ejder has taken me all the way from Trondheim down to Oslo, to Norway’s wonderful islands and through the fjords.

During my two years with Ejder, I have upgraded all thru-hull fittings to composite, changed the tiller, cut out the old septic tank, got a new lazy bag and sprayhood, upgraded the whole deck-drainage system, renewed the railing wire, and bought new fenders + ropes.

Read more general info about the HR 29 here:

I have received quite some messages so I thought I add some more photos and create a Q&A list with all questions asked for transparency:

1. I would pay VAT on export which depends on the actual purchase price.

2. Unfortunately I have no documents on the sails. The main sail is a bit blown out, but you can certainly sail it for another 5 years. The headsails are mainly a 180% genoa (it’s really huge and in good condition), two spinnakers and a gennaker (they look good but I’ve never used them in the two years I’ve had the boat). I got an offer for a new jib sail and the matching furling system (Furlex 104s 5mm). For both together you pay around 5,000 Eur in Norway.

3. Rigging: In 2020 everything was checked by RIGGmaster in Trondheim and they replaced what was needed, including the terminals of the wires, cables were pulled and the tricolor light was renewed. The full report is available. (Here 2500 Eur were paid).

4. Engine and saildrive: The engine hours are complete. It hasn’t gone much, but unfortunately wasn’t well maintained before my time. Last week a mechanic was there because I’m thinking of putting a new engine in and selling the boat for a higher price. He said that the engine looks worse than it is because salt water has run over from the impeller at the front and it looks a bit rusty. Oil pressure and compression are great, but there are small oil leaks due to old seals. The bellows on the saildrive will have to be replaced soon, which will cost about 1200 Eur. A new engine e.g. Volvo Penta D1-20/130s costs 8,000 Eur in Norway. For the old one, the garage would still give 1000 for a change. Alternatively you could do a partial overhaul for approximatly 3000 Eur the workshop said.

5. Cooling system: The engine has an open single-circuit system with sea water which cools the engine.

6. The mainsail is stored in the new lazy bag, is hoisted up the main mast without a sledding system and can be stowed in the lazy bag again easily.

7. Teak deck: The deck is in good condition, has not been worked on (so there is enough teak to sand as visible from the pictures) but water has run under the poles at a drainage point on the starboard side. The boat is covered in its winter harbour atm. One could sand it down and renew the joints (a one-week job which I will do if the boat is not sold until then and then offer it at a higher price). You could also let a workshop do it and have a beautiful new deck, or seal it with fiberglass for around 10,000 Eur which requires less maintenance but perhaps offers less charme.

8. Waste water tank: The previous owners didn’t know how to use it properly and it was clear to see that it had once overflowed under high pressure. As it must be possible to pump out black water in Norway from this year onwards, I have removed the old tank and would install a new one behind the toilet, also with a better drop height and accessibility for pumping out (cost 500Eur).

9. Thru-hull fittings: I have renewed them all to composite, you have to touch them no more.

10. electrical system: It’s still very messy from my predecessor. Everything works as it should, but it should be switched to LEDs and the placement could be optimized.

Here is a summary:

Possible upgrades:
New engine and saildrive: 8,000 Eur (Boat could still be sailed for a while, it’s just that you want to have your motor on your side when you dig into 6 meter waves on bigger trips)
Furling jib headsail system: 5000 Eur (Not strictly necesssary but a big plus for one-handed sailing and comfort generally)
Possibly have the teak deck professionally renewed or sand and grout it yourself.
Waste water tank: 500 Eur

Finally, I would like to say that I am fully prepared to negotiate a price and show the boat online.
When I look at the prices of HR 29 sailboats, I think that my boat is one that you can buy relatively cheap, and if you put around 15,000 euros into it, you will have an absolute dreamboat with a new engine and new sails. I don’t have the money or the time at the moment because I want to buy an apartment in Oslo with my girlfriend.

If you want to buy the boat and give it to the workshop right here, I can also mediate and arrange repairs before a sailing trip to the new home ????

If you would like more specific pictures, just ask!

I am offering my boat relatively cheap since there are small, unfinished projects, such as the teak deck overhaul, and perhaps a motor-upgrade. Furthermore, the boat does not have an autopilot atm.

This is a perfect boat for someone who has the time and money to finish the upgrading I began. The boat is the perfect size for two to four persons and sails fantastically.

Looking forward to a hyggelig boat-talk with you.

All the best,
Hannes
