We’re reluctantly saying goodbye to Scarab, our beautiful ketch sailboat and home for the past three seasons in the Mediterranean. A classic French-built Mallard 1040 — she’s known for her solid construction, timeless character, and balanced ketch rig, ideal for live-aboard life and extended cruising.
Scarab is a smooth and sturdy sailer. Even in stormy conditions, she feels safe and stable — a boat that inspires real confidence. Her 38hp engine powers her steadily when the wind drops, and the ketch rig offers a flexible range of sailing options for varying conditions. Whether sailing with one, two, or all three sails, she’s both fun and forgiving — perfect for new sailors learning the ropes, yet equally well-suited to experienced hands looking for a trustworthy vessel without the clutter of unnecessary gadgets.
The cockpit is spacious and well laid out, with a captain’s seat and plenty of room for crew and guests to sit comfortably while under sail. It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner or shared meal while anchored up in a quiet bay.
Inside, she’s warm and welcoming, with a cosy timber interior and new furnishings that make her feel like home. The aft cabin boasts a spacious queen–king size bed — a rare luxury — and the boat is filled with smart, functional storage to keep life aboard tidy and simple. The fully equipped galley has everything you need to cook proper meals at sea. She also features a clean, fully functioning bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower.
Scarab comes well-stocked with useful spare parts, tools, and essentials for maintenance and repairs — perfect for those planning extended cruising or off-grid living. She also has a trusted dinghy, with a 2hp Yamaha engine.
Recent upgrades include:
– Updated autopilot system 2025
– Deep-cleaned diesel tank 2025
– Secondary water tank installation 2024
– New upholstery in the galley/living area 2024
– Antifouling completed May 2025
– Updated Exterior Painting 2025
– Renovated Aft Cabin 2024
Lovingly maintained by us and her previous owners of over 30 years, Scarab is full of charm and ready for her next chapter. We’re only selling to return to New Zealand to be closer to family.
